The Story Behind B.C. Day

Why do we celebrate B.C Day and why B.C Day is statutory holiday?

British Columbia emerged as a significant region in the early years of colonial Canada, with the colony's declaration on August 2, 1858. This event was not merely symbolic but a response to the excitement and upheaval caused by the prospectors drawn to the promise of gold along the Fraser River.
James Douglas, the governor of the colony of Vancouver Island at the time, found himself at the forefront of this transformation. His leadership was vital in managing the gold rush disorder and maintaining peace with the Indigenous communities, laying the foundation for stability and growth.
Once the chaos of the gold rush settled, British Columbia became a vibrant mosaic of cultures. Chinese, European, and Indigenous people from varied backgrounds contributed to the province's social fabric, creating a rich and diverse tapestry. This multicultural development forms the essence of B.C. Day, celebrating the contributions and heritage of all who have shaped the province.

In modern times, B.C. Day has evolved into more than just a holiday. It is a vibrant celebration on the first Monday of August, filled with parades, festivals, and family gatherings. Communities come alive with events that highlight the province's history, stunning natural beauty, and diverse cultural heritage.

During the summertime in beautiful British Columbia, the province celebrates B.C Day on the first Monday of August every year. This statutory holiday marks a long weekend across Canada, except in Quebec, Yukon, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Labrador. B.C Day is a time of numerous events and festivities following the celebrations of Canada Day on July 1. Each province in Canada has a unique name for this holiday, making it a significant and diverse celebration across the country.

Some of the different names to mark this day:

British Columbia - B.C Day
Alberta - Heritage Day
Manitoba - Terry Fox Day
New Brunswick - New Brunswick Day
Nova Scotia - Natal Day
B.C Day is a day to celebrate our region's rich heritage and culture, no matter which name it goes by. So, unwind and make great memories with your family and friends!
