To mark the 40th anniversary of the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, the Garden hosted a three-day celebration from April 24 to 26. The public was invited to step into this cultural landmark and experience a significant milestone where history and heritage come together. The celebration featured special guest Michael Harcourt, former Premier of British Columbia and Mayor of Vancouver from 1980 to 1986. Mr. Harcourt played a key role during the planning and hosting of Expo 86, a pivotal moment in the city’s history, and witnessed the Garden’s creation and early development. As one of the dignitaries at the Garden’s opening ceremony, his return four decades later carries deep historical significance, symbolizing a lasting connection between urban development and cultural heritage across generations. Opened to the public during Expo 86, the Garden is the first authentic classical Chinese garden constructed outside of China, designed in the traditional Ming Dynasty Suzhou style. More than 50 artisans, including architects, craftsmen, and stone masons from Suzhou, China, travelled to Vancouver and spent over a year constructing the Garden using traditional handcraft techniques and mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of any nails. This brought over two thousand years of Chinese garden-building tradition to Vancouver, creating a space that is both visually stunning and culturally meaningful. More than a botanical garden or tourist attraction, the Garden is a vibrant cultural and community hub offering year-round programming. From traditional performances and cultural exhibitions to wellness activities (such as Taichi, yoga, and tea ceremonies), as well as celebrations (including Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, Christmas, and Easter), the Garden provides rich and diverse experiences throughout the year. Each visit offers a unique atmosphere shaped by the seasons, making it an important space that connects history, art, culture, and community. Ahead of the official anniversary celebration, a special Influencer Preview event was organzied by Choice team, bringing together local content creators for an exclusive preview of the Garden's anniversary programming. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the Garden’s history, cultural significance, and upcoming celebration activities before sharing their experiences with their audiences. |
