Canada 150 Atlantic to Pacific Drumming Celebration
The Legacy 150 Celebrations Society
Canada Day 2017 not only marked the nation’s 150th birthday, but also a historic moment of the first ever simultaneous drumming across Canada. On July 1st, 2017, drummers across five time zones and the eight Canadian cities of Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax drummed simultaneously to celebrate Canada’s birthday, multiculturalism, and diversity. Everyone was welcome to drum for six minutes across Canada as the event was broadcasted live on social media platforms. With the support from all regions, the celebration in Vancouver, BC, attempted a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for “Most Nationalities in a Drum Circle” (single venue). While the attempt fell short of the requirement of 50 nationalities, it marked a special moment of unity and rhythm between the drummers representing 37 nations that participated. The celebration at Creekside Park, Vancouver, was hosted by media personality Man About Town Fred Lee and attracted thousands of attendees. The event received tremendous support from the community. Dignitaries who attended the event included Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, The Honourable Carla Qualtrough; The Honourable Hedy Fry; Deputy Consul General Tian Ni, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China; MLA Michael Lee, Government of British Columbia, and Acting Mayor Raymond Louie, City of Vancouver. Richard Wong, Chair of the Canada 150 Atlantic to Pacific Drumming Celebration, was presented an official proclamation of “An All Canadian Simultaneous Drumming Celebration Day” by Vancouver acting mayor Raymond Louie. The event also received a special video greeting from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. A vibrant line-up of multicultural performances also entertained the crowd after the all-inclusive simultaneous drumming across Canada and GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ drumming attempt. There was media coverage from CBC (TV, Radio & Online), The Vancouver Sun, The Province, Global TV, CTV, Fairchild TV and Radio, Vancouver Courier, Sing Tao, Ming Pao, and more. |
