Press Conference
The Legacy 150 Celebrations Society
Following the success of the inaugural Canada 150 Atlantic to Pacific Celebration on July 1, 2017, the Legacy 150 Celebrations Society announced the exciting news of the return of the 2nd annual Canada Day Drumming Celebration on June 12, 2018. The nationwide celebration was set for 12 Canadian cities across five time zones, including Vancouver, Kamloops, Prince George, Prince Rupert, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. Canada Day Drumming Celebration 2018 national committee chair Richard Wong, vice-chair Maggie Ip, and vice-chair Colonel Howe Lee shared with local media and attending audience the recent updates, event highlights, as well as special congratulatory messages from the Right Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada; the Hon. Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage; and the Hon. Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of National Defence, MP for Vancouver South. The Legacy 150 Celebrations Society, the non-profit organization hosting the event, established an endowment fund with the Vancouver Foundation to help better achieve this national, multicultural community project. The simultaneous drumming event across Canada embraced diversity, create understanding, and celebrate unity on Canada Day, July 1, 2018! A cheque presentation took place as Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wong donated $50,000 to the Vancouver Foundation for the Legacy 150 Celebrations Endowment Fund. “We believe it is one of the few celebrations from coast to coast to coast,” said Richard Wong, National Elected Chair of the Society, “it will be broadcast live at Creekside Park, the Vancouver venue, and across social media platforms. It is a historic moment and we invite the public to join in the celebration.” Guests at the press conference included Acting Mayor Raymond Louie, City of Vancouver; Vancouver Park Board Commissioners Catherine Evans and Michael Wiebe. The press conference ended with a lively, multicultural drumming presentation from The Naad Foundation, The Irish Wakers, and African Soul Train. |
