The Food Garden at Lansdowne Centre Returns toHelp Richmond Families in Need
Thousands of meals created for charities in 2021 from donated produce
For the second year in a row, Lansdowne Centre, Richmond is turning the south east corner of its parking lot - plus planters near the mall Skytrain station - into garden plots growing fresh vegetables for Richmond families in need. Last year, The Food Garden at Lansdowne Centre donated freshly grown produce to the Richmond Food Bank Society and Urban Bounty - organizations that prepare freshly made meals for a number of charitable groups who work with food insecure families. Hundreds of meals were prepared from the produce each week, totalling thousands of nutrient rich dishes throughout the spring and summer months. This year, it’s not just local charities who will benefit from The Food Garden at Lansdowne Centre. Every Thursday from May 12th to September 15th (weather permitting), The Food Garden’s resident gardener will be on-site to host free drop-in gardening workshops from noon to 1pm for anyone who wishes to attend. The garden talks will cover different topics each week, they are suitable for all ages. “We want to extend invitations to local schools, summer camps, senior groups, community organizations, or just individuals interested in learning more about gardening,” said Bronwyn Bailey, Marketing Manager at Lansdowne Centre. “If we can turn a corner of a parking lot into a beautiful oasis, complete with pollinator plants for bees and butterflies, as well as fresh veggies to feed and nourish, then anything is possible from those with large plots to balconies.” To celebrate The Food Garden at Lansdowne Centre, three special Veggie Days are being held in the mall on May 15th, June 5th and July 10th. Each month, visitors will be able to win prizes, participate in activities, and get their gardening questions answered by experts, in Lansdowne Centre’s Centre Court. Up for grabs at the Spin to Win wheel will be adorable vegetable stuffies – one per month to collect – carrots, ears of corn and daikon and other great prizes provided by Lansdowne Centre and its tenants. |
